Setup Guide
Get the Most Out of LightsOut
LightsOut works great right out of the box — but it gets even better when you set up the Control Center control, lock screen widget, and home screen widget. Here's how.
Add LightsOut to Control Center
Replace (or add to) the stock flashlight in your Control Center with LightsOut — so you can start a timed flashlight session right from the lock screen.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Tap Control Center.
- Scroll down to find LightsOut in the list of available controls.
- Tap the green + button to add it.
- Drag it to wherever you want it — right next to (or replacing) the stock flashlight works great.
- Swipe down from the top-right to open Control Center and tap the LightsOut control to launch straight into the app.
Add the Lock Screen Widget
See your remaining timer at a glance without unlocking your phone.
- Long-press your lock screen until the Customize button appears.
- Tap Customize, then tap your lock screen (not your wallpaper).
- Tap the widget area below the time to add a widget.
- Scroll through the list and tap LightsOut.
- Choose either the circular or rectangular widget based on your available slot.
- Tap Done to save. Your timer countdown will now appear on your lock screen whenever a timer is running.
Add the Home Screen Widget
One-tap launch and timer status right from your home screen.
- Long-press any empty space on your home screen until the icons start wiggling.
- Tap the + button in the top-left corner.
- Search for LightsOut or scroll to find it.
- Select the small widget (2×2) and tap Add Widget.
- Drag it wherever you want on your home screen.
- Tap Done to save.
Use LightsOut with Siri
Hands-free control — just ask.
- Make sure LightsOut is installed and you've opened it at least once.
- Say "Hey Siri, start LightsOut timer" — Siri will start a default timer.
- For a specific duration, say "Start LightsOut timer for 15 minutes."
- To stop early, say "Stop LightsOut timer."
- You can also add LightsOut actions to custom Shortcuts via the Shortcuts app for more advanced automations.
FAQ
Questions
Why does LightsOut need camera access?
The iPhone's flashlight (torch) is technically part of the camera hardware — it's controlled through the same system framework. LightsOut uses Apple's camera framework exclusively to control the flashlight. It does not access your camera, capture photos or video, or store anything. No camera permission is required — only the ability to toggle the torch.
Will the flashlight stay on if I lock my phone?
iOS doesn't allow third-party apps to keep the flashlight active after the screen locks — this is a system-level limitation on all iPhones. LightsOut keeps your screen on during the timer (like a video player), which keeps the torch running. If you manually lock your phone, the flashlight will turn off.
What if I swipe away the app mid-timer?
LightsOut will pause your timer and turn off the flashlight automatically to save your battery. When you reopen the app, you'll see a Resume prompt with your remaining time ready to go.
Does the Control Center control require a newer iPhone?
The Control Center integration requires iOS 18 or later. The rest of the app — timers, widgets, Siri — works on iOS 17 and up.
Is there a subscription or in-app purchase?
Nope. $1.99 once. No ads, no subscription, no upsells. Every feature is included.
